Modern Slavery Act 2015
What are the legal requirements?
Section 54 of the Modern Slavery Act 2015 requires businesses with a turnover of £36 million or over, to produce an annual Modern Slavery Statement. The statement tells customers/clients how the organisation is taking steps to prevent modern slavery within its business and supply chain. A statement may also be required as part of procurement processes, especially for government contracts.
On 25 March 2025, the UK Government issued updated guidance on what information it expects organisations to include within their statements. The statutory guidance does not set legal requirements as to content, but organisations may suffer brand damage where they fail to meet those requirements. The contents of statements are monitored by the Modern Slavery Statement Registry and compliance is highlighted to the public.
The new guidance sets out the detailed content that should be included in the statement. This includes: organisational structure, organisational policies, assessing and managing risk, due diligence in relation to modern slavery, training and monitoring and evaluation. The Government has set out expectations for companies issuing their first statement focusing on key issues. This is then recommended to be improved upon in later statements, with more detailed and focused action.
Organisations are recommended to provide an outline of the training that they are providing to their suppliers, as well as internal staff.
Our programme helps educate suppliers about modern slavery and obtain information for businesses to audit their supplier practices. It is an easy and cost-efficient way to help prevent modern slavery. We can also identify suppliers that present highest priority for monitoring.
